Understanding Online Blackjack Surrender Strategy

Some online blackjack variants give player the option to surrender. In simple terms this is an opportunity to cut losses if you find yourself in a very disadvantageous situation. However, like other blackjack moves, surrender has to be used in accordance with optimum strategy in order to increase the average return.

Surrender functions as follows. After you place the ante wager, two cards are dealt to the player and to the dealer. The dealer checks for blackjack if required. It is here that the player can surrender. You will lose only half the wager and the game will end. This article explains the optimum strategy for surrender in online blackjack.

Single Deck, Dealer Stands on Soft 17

You should surrender under the following situations.

When you have a hand value of 16 from your two dealt cards and the dealer has an ace or ten value card. With these dealer cards, if you have a hand value of 15 or less the optimum blackjack strategy requires you to hit. And if you have a hand value of 17 or more then you should stand.

When you have a pair of sevens and the dealer has a ten value card.

Single Deck, Dealer Hits on Soft 17

You should surrender under the following situations.

When you have a hand value of 15, 16 or 17 and the dealer has an ace.

When you have a hand value of 16 and the dealer has a ten value card.

When you have a pair of sevens and the dealer has a ten value card or an ace.

Multiple Decks, Dealer Stands on Soft 17

You should surrender under the following situations.

When you have a hand value of 15 and the dealer has a ten value card.

When you have a hand value of 16 and the dealer has a nine, ten value card or an ace.

Multiple Decks, Dealer Hits on Soft 17

You should surrender under the following situations.

When you have a hand value of 15 and the dealer has a ten value card or an ace.

When you have a hand value of 16 and the dealer has a nine, a ten value card or an ace.

When you have a hand value of 17 and the dealer has an ace.

When you have a pair of eights and the dealer has an ace.

The optimum blackjack surrender strategy has been generated through computer simulation. It will not guarantee a win on every deal but will yield results in the long run.
